If you are having trouble getting on to one of your favourite social media sites, you’ll want to know if the website is down and other people are having the same problem.

Places to Check:

  1. Down right now – shows current status as well as recent uptime / downtime status history. However, this site may be unreachable when there is heavy traffic, like say, a Facebook outage. (DownRightNow.com)
  2. Down for everyone or just me – Shows current status of site. Reliable. (DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com)
  3. Twitter search – If Facebook is down, there will be tweets about it. (Twitter.com)

If no one else is reporting a problem, you could be the lucky first person to have the problem. More likely though, it’s time to do a bit of troubleshooting at your end — check your Internet connection and your web browser.

Squirrel Carving a Pumpkin

Luckily, I had my camera handy when I saw this squirrel attempting to carve a pumpkin. He was really going at it!

Took some video too, but that turned out too shaky for some strange, laughter-infused reason.

Foxtails, animated

Was going through some photos I had taken last weekend, and saw these foxtails again—foxtail barley.

In trying to capture the feel of the wind, I put the photos together in an animation and found the effect to be rather mesmerizing.

Sudoku on Tablet, Easy level, Fog skin

If you are looking for a good way to learn Sudoku or a good online Sudoku game to improve your skills, check out: http://www.enjoysudoku.com/.

You can play on your mobile phone, book reader, tablet, desktop or laptop computer — There are apps for Android, iPhone/iPad/iPod, Kindle, Nook, and web browser. All versions include daily games at every level from the very easy to challenging levels. (Paid versions include unlimited, ad-free play.)

There is colour-coding while you play to highlight numbers that have been completed, assisting you in scanning to see potential openings.  If you want to use pencil marks, that’s easy to do too – just click on Pencil first, then the cell or digit (depending on your input method).

New to Sudoku? There are lessons and starter levels available to help you get started. There are also hints in case you get stuck, including the option to fill in all the pencil marks. For additional pointers, you may want to check out these solving techniques: http://www.su-doku.net/tech.php.

From the main menu, you can go into the Settings area to change the skin and font for your preference in colour scheme and character appearance. If you aren’t familiar with Kanji or Hanzi and are just learning Mahjong, you might find playing Sudoku with these fonts useful.

Mahjong game information with examples of rules and scoring for a number of popular variations can be found here: http://mahjongtime.com/mahjong-game-info.html There are options for multi-player, online play of course. This one doesn’t require a download and seems pretty popular. Video illustrating example of gameplay

Some screenshot examples follow in the slideshow below.

Have fun!

Horse Tongue

GooglePlus has done some updates, including changes to the size of the cover photo on profile pages. The new size is a 16:9 ratio, and the minimum seems to be 480 x 270. Since these can be animated, I had a look around to see if I had any video clips I could upload…

Horse Tongue

It looks rather strange when it’s stretched out full-size on G+ though!
